King of the Wing

This year I had the pleasure of being a judge at the 9th Annual King the Wing competition. Teams from across the territory competed to see who had the best chicken wing, while hundreds of people flocked to Magens Bay beach to watch them duke it out.

The event is open to restaurants and anyone willing to go head-to-head to see who has the best wing. King of the Wing is hosted by Alpine Securities every year and they raise money for the Junior Achievement of the Virgin Islands. I’ve seen the Competition grow over the years and it was such an honor to be a judge this year. I was blessed with the opportunity to interact with some really great people and probably the biggest highlight was getting to meet Travel Channel’s Adam Richmond from Man v. Food.

In total there were 42 teams who competed at this year's King of the Wing competition and I tasted wings from 21 of those teams. That's probably the most wings I've tried in such a short period of time. They were some very unique wings, like the cheesy Cheetos coated chicken wing; which tasted weird and I probably wouldn't attempt it on myself. There were some really bad wings, that actually made me pause and evaluate my life and quite frankly question who lied to them and told them their wing was good enough for a competition, much less a backyard BBQ. This year’s winner was the International Capital Management Company, whose wing was a sweet, spicy, crispy and very well-seasoned; they gave two options, with bacon and without. I'm not sure whose idea it was to take a crispy, fried, sweet, spicy and sticky wing and roll it in bacon, but they are awesome and I need to shake their hand. I literally just wanted a bucket of those wings they were so good and VERY well deserving of the win. The down side to ICMC's win is that, they are a Management company and I can't drive up to any of their offices and order these wings; I probably could but I don't want security to be called on me.

All in all I want to thank Jason P. Charles, chief of external affairs at Alpine Securities and his team for giving me the opportunity to partake in the judging process. Congratulations to all the winners, well done to the losers and I'll see you all at next year’s competition, you never know maybe I may throw my hat in the ring.

Love Always,

Nina
